High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.

HCHS, Northside Health Careers High School was opened in 1984 as one of the first magnet schools in south Texas under principal John Boyers, who remained principal until 2002. The land on which the school sits was donated to Northside Independent School District by the San Antonio medical foundation. The school mascot is the phoenix, and the school colors are blue, maroon and white. Northside Health Careers High School is a magnet school in Northside Independent School District for students that are interested in pursuing a career in the health profession. HCHS attracts students from school districts all across Bexar County and some from as far as Hondo, Texas.

HCHS is unique from other Bexar County magnet schools in that it operates as an independent campus rather than as part of a parent school. Admission to HCHS requires the submission of an application and essay, as well as a C average. Eligible applicants are entered into a lottery system with selected students notified by mail. Each year, over 800 students apply to fill only 250 spots. HCHS educates about 900 students from the 9th grade through 12th grade.

The curriculum of HCHS complies with the requirements of the Texas education agency, but additional courses that relate to the health field are also offered. HCHS does not have a football, basketball, baseball, or volleyball team. It does compete against other schools in golf, tennis, aquatics, and cross country. HCHS is a nationally recognized school, having been named a national blue ribbon school for the 1990-1991 academic year. In addition, educators at HCHS have also been recognized at the state and national level for excellence in education. HCHS known for its best teaching skills and personnel attention towards every individual that leads to overall development of a student is one of the best schools in United States.
