Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson High School is located in South Central Los Angeles and has served this community since 1916. Over the last decades many accomplished individuals have attended the school, including choreographer Alvin Ailey, diplomat and Nobel Peace Prize winner Ralph Bunche, actress Dorothy Dandridge and jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon. Many famous pop and jazz musicians attended Jefferson in the 1950s and 60s.
Today, Jefferson strives to produce accomplished, skilled, and responsible graduates who will be ready to analyze and solve the problems of this increasingly diverse community in the 21st century. Jefferson High School is located Los Angeles Unified School District, 1319 East 41st St., Los Angeles, California.
The Jefferson High School sports teams have turned in some great performances over the years. For example the track teams of the 1950s were probably some of the best all-time performers nation wide. However all of the Demos' teams over the last 80 plus years, win or lose, have strived to build character, discipline, and a sense of fairplay and sportsmanship.
Under the direction of Head Coach Arturo Escandon, Coaches Johnny Walker, Junior, and Sidney Lewis, the Frosh-Soph team won 4 games. This was the first time in at least 4 years that they have won any games. This year, under their new Head Coach Issac Hatley, the Demos hope to build on last year’s success.
Jefferson is being reorganized as a traditional calendar school, composed of four Small Learning Communities, SLCs. The goal of each SLC is to offer individualized attention to their students. The first day of the traditional calendar year is September 5, 2006.
Jefferson High School is committed to success, challenging students and staff to achieve their potential. Their mission is to establish and maintain a caring, positive and safe environment in which students may maximize their academic growth. To that end, they recognize that continual efforts toward school improvement are essential and that all members of their school community are to be treated with dignity and respect.
