High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.

San Jose High was founded in 1863 and is one of California’s oldest high schools. It is a small comprehensive high school with 1000 students, grades 9 to 12. In 2005, San Jose High was ranked 218th on Newsweek's list of America's top one thousand high schools. The 2006 edition lists San Jose in position 224. Future graduates will join a proud and prestigious group of alumni, including Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, Congressman Mike Honda, former Congressman Don Edwards, opera star and Opera San Jose founder Irene Dalis, and KGO South Bay News Bureau Chief, Rigo Chacon.

The school has offered the International Baccalaureate, IB program since 1985. Before 1985, San Jose High Academy, SJHA was known as San Jose High School. A federal judge ordered involuntary desegregation in the San Jose Unified School District, which resulted in creating an IB regular school at SJHA. San Jose High Academy is known for the Big Bone Game with Lincoln High School, its cross-town rival.

The school has been successful in providing challenging academic programs to a truly diverse student population. Technology is used extensively throughout the instructional program. There are four portable computer labs, each containing sixteen iBooks for use in individual classrooms, as well as the instructional computer labs. San Jose High Academy has received local, state, and national recognition as an exemplary International Baccalaureate magnet school with many outstanding students, staff and programs.

The International Baccalaureate Organization, IBO aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
