Riverview High School
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Riverview High is a four-year, grades 9 to 12 comprehensive high school located in Sarasota, Florida. The present population of this Gulf-Coast area located south of Tampa is approximately 356,000 inhabitants. The current school population is 2590 students. The graduates of 2006 number 611 with 43 percent continued their education at a four year college, and 25 percent attended a Community College.
The main building was opened in 1958 and a number of other buildings have been added through the years, ranging from an expanded library to new athletic facilities. There are 151 classroom teachers, 10 School Counselors and 5 Administrators. Among them they have 75 Master’s Degrees, 3 Specialist Degrees and 3 Doctorate Degrees. The IB, International Baccalaureate Program is a two-year university preparatory course of study encompassing the junior and senior years of high school. These academies are designed to unite students with common interests in a learning environment where teams of teachers engage in joint curriculum development and shared instructional strategizing.
They have an award-winning theater arts program which offers opportunities for students to perform in a variety of school productions. Their music department has been recognized by the state of Florida as a Music Demonstration School for its award winning music department.
The mission of Riverview High is to challenge students to maximize their potential as learners, achievers, and productive world citizens. School will offer for all Students rigorous standards based curricula in preparation for advanced educational opportunities, career paths to provide a school to career with employment and higher education, the knowledge and skill necessary to attain optimal health and physical fitness and to maintain both throughout their lives.
