High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.

Granite Bay High School, GBHS is a public suburban high school located in Granite Bay fifteen miles north of Sacramento.  The attendance area serves the community of Granite Bay as well as the southeastern part of the city of Roseville. Economically, Granite Bay is primarily middle to upper class community. The school, which serves grades 9 through 12, opened in the fall of 1996. The School Principal is Mike McGuire.

Granite Bay is on a four-by-four block schedule with the school year split into two 18-week terms. Students are enrolled in four classes each term, which is equivalent to two traditional semesters.  Therefore, each semester-long course at Granite Bay is equal to a yearlong course in a traditional high school.

The student population is approximately 2083 students with a senior class of 504. The racial composition consists of 82.5 percent Caucasian, 5 percent Hispanic, 6.5 percent Asian, 1.5 percent African-American, 1 percent American Indian and 1.5 percent Pacific Islander or Filipino. The high school program consists of a full schedule of college preparatory classes.

Granite Bay students have several extra-curricular activities from which to choose allowing them multiple opportunities to become involved, find a niche, and experience success. Each fall Student Government sponsors Club Day showcasing each of the club offerings. Currently students can choose from a record 27 clubs, ranging from Bonsai to Film Producers. Some clubs focus on service to the community; some have a scholarly focus; some are hobby-based.

Granite Bay High School is committed to excellence: motivating and challenging students through a partnership of students, staff, parents and community. Students will develop an individual and a community sense of belonging and responsibility. Creativity will be nurtured as students acquire, apply and practice the knowledge, skills and behaviors essential for success in the future.
