Annapolis
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district. Annapolis High School is located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, near the city of Annapolis. Annapolis is the second oldest high school in the county, having existed since 1898. The student body is 1,712 as of the 2005-2006 school years. It is a host school of the International Baccalaureate program. The Principal of school is Donald R. Lilley. The school mascot is Panthers and school colors are maroon, blue and white. Annapolis High School sits a few short miles away from the heart of Annapolis, Maryland's historic and charming state capital. The school celebrated the completion of their first century during the 1998-1999 school years. The energy and enthusiasm of its staff and students characterize Annapolis High School. The environment of the school empowers students to outshine in a positive learning environment created by its hallmark program known as T.E.A.M. Days. Annapolis High School offers 21 Advanced Placement courses, the most offered in Anne Arundel County. Annapolis boasts five commended students as well as eight Maryland Distinguished Scholars. In 1999, Annapolis was one of only five high schools to receive honorable mention in the state Blue Ribbon Schools Program. The students have undertaken the challenge of creating theme murals in all of the school lavatories to re-enforce the commitment to the environment. At Annapolis High School, they have a philosophy that says that a student who is active will be more successful overall. As a result, they have a large variety of clubs in which students can participate. This school is highly academic and offers not only several Advanced Placement courses, but a wide variety of athletic and extra curricular opportunities for all students.
