High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
 
Taylor Allderdice High School is a public school, established in 1927 and is located at the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Cassandra Richardson-Kemp is the Principal of the school. Students from other neighborhoods within Pittsburgh and the borough of Mt. Oliver may also attend Allderdice through the pre-engineering magnet program or through the No Child Left behind Act, because of the school has the district's highest State Standardized Test scores.
 
The school mascot is Dragon and school colors are green and white. It has the largest student population of any school in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. It is constantly recognized as one of the best urban public high schools in America, with a gifted and honors programs for those who qualify. It won a Blue Ribbon award from the U.S. Department of Education in 1996, in 2005 was ranked as tied for 1062 in Newsweek's top high schools and in 2006 it was ranked at 1189. The school has published its newspaper, the Foreword, since Taylor Allderdice's founding in 1927.
 
Allderdice High School is a complete neighborhood school drawing students from nine different communities and offering all academic programs at the gifted, scholars, and standard academic levels. Allderdice is recognized by the Middle States Association of College and Secondary Schools and kindly supported by active groups of parents, alumni, and business and community organizations.
 
At Allderdice High School, their mission is to provide a learning environment where students are challenged to reach their individual potential in the achievement of knowledge and the development of personal, cultural and democratic values essential for future success.
