Academic Magnet
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Academic Magnet High School was established in 1988 and the first class graduated in 1992. Academic Magnet High School is a high school in North Charleston, South Carolina. The school requires students to join through an admissions process based on middle school grades and a written essay that is completed with guidelines given by the school.
The principal of the Academic Magnet High School is Michael Tolley and Patrick Harrington is the Assistant Principal of the school. Academic Magnet has more than 42 clubs, including African American Awarness Club, Animanga Club, Asian Awareness Club, Chess Club, Dirty Birds Drum Corps, Drama, FCA, Forensics, Future Problem Solving, Jewish Awareness Club, Juggling Club, Martial Arts Club, Mock Trial, Mu Alpha Theta, Photography, Ping Pong Club etc.
In 2005, South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control presented the school with the Donna Bates Memorial Award for coastal environmental education activities. They offer AP, Advanced placement Courses such as AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP Environmental Science, AP European History, AP US History, AP English Language, AP English Literature, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics etc.
The Academic Magnet High School is recognized as one of the foremost secondary schools in South Carolina and in the nation. This school is highly academic and offers not only several Advanced Placement courses, but a wide variety of athletic and extra curricular opportunities for all students.
