Poway High School
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Poway High School, PHS is a public, comprehensive high school located in the city of Poway in the far southwest portion of the U.S. state of California. Established in 1961, it serves ninth through twelfth grade students from the communities of Poway and Rancho Bernardo. Poway High School is situated in Poway, which is in the northern part of San Diego County, approximately 35 miles northeast of downtown San Diego. The campus covers 59 acres. PHS is the home of the Titans and is one of five high schools of the Poway Unified School District.
Mr. Scott Fisher is the principal of the school. Poway High School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. First granted in 1965, the current accreditation is valid through 2008. Poway High School is both a California distinguished school award winner in 1999 and a national blue ribbon school in 1990 and 1991.
The school field’s teams in 15 sports are baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, roller hockey, soccer, softball, swim and dive, tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling. Poway High School’s most successful athletic program is the wrestling program, which has won 3 state championships, 57 different CIF division awards, and numerous Palomar League awards.
The Poway High School community will insure a safe, respectful, challenging learning environment that requires all students to meet high expectations and pursue their goals.
