High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.

Ponderosa High School is one of two high schools in Parker, Colorado and is part of the Douglas County School District formed in 1958 by the consolidation of 17 smaller school districts. It is the fourth-largest school district in Colorado, serving over 48,000 students with over 60 schools led by a seven-member Board of Education. The Mission of the Douglas County School District is to provide an educational foundation that allows each student to reach his or her individual potential.

The incorporated area encompassed approximately one square mile and included 285 residents. Soon after incorporation in 1981, the Town adopted zoning and subdivision ordinances. Ponderosa High School was founded in 1983 the school has been around for 23 years. Their school is much respected, earning an excellent score on the Colorado Student Assessment Program in 2004 and a high score in 2005. The exercise included having team members determine when and how schools would shut down, how schools would be disinfected, and how the district would provide resources to students, staff and the community.

Ponderosa High School would provide support to individual schools, manage communication and oversee district operations. It is set up to consider all aspects of the school district during an emergency, from overall executive leadership and financial, legal and insurance ramifications, to student issues like student release, learning, school closures and transportation.

The mission of Ponderosa High School is the development of the mind, character, and physical well being of their students through the creation of an environment fostering academic excellence, maturity, responsibility and mutual respect. All students are expected to demonstrate effective reading, writing, listening, speaking and computational skills. In addition, students will possess the ability to solve a variety of problems in a collaborative environment, become effective communicators and critical thinkers and problem-solvers.
