High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
 
North Salem High School is a secondary school in Salem, Oregon, United States, that was founded in 1906. North Salem was the first high school to be built in the city of Salem, Oregon, and when initially opened, its name was simply Salem High School. However upon the completion of South Salem High School in 1954, it was renamed North Salem. North Salem High School is in the Salem-Keizer School District and has a population of approximately 1,988 students in the 2006-2007 school years.
 
The current building at 14th and D streets opened in 1937, replacing an earlier building at High and Marion streets, which is now the site of Macy's. The school's mascot is the Vikings. As of 2006, the principal was John Honey.
 
Curriculum features includes Advanced Placement Opportunities are English, Calculus, U.S. history, European history, computer science, government, politics, and statistics. International languages are French, Japanese, and Spanish. Chemeketa community college credit opportunities are college credit now in college writing, family and consumer studies, business education, computer science, technology, and science. Honors courses are biology, sophomore economics, American literature, English 9, English 10, geometry, and world history.
 
The mission of North Salem High School for the administration, faculty, staff, students, and community is to promote academic excellence by providing opportunities and instruction through which all students can become proficient in literacy and math.
