High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.

Palisades Charter High School is a financially independent comprehensive four year high school. In 1993 a Charter was approved by the Los Angeles Unified School District and the California State Department of Education, which specified accountability for higher levels of student achievement. In 2003, all school stakeholder groups unanimously supported the transition to financial independence and accountability.

A mathematics, science and technology magnet program was added in 1994, and a new media entertainment academy was formed in 1997 which provides instruction in digital technology and electronic communication.

Palisades Charter High is fully accredited by the western association of schools and colleges until 2006. The school year includes two semesters of 20 weeks each. There are three alternating class periods per day of approximately 100 minutes each. There are 130 certificated staff members, including 5 administrators, 1 librarian, 5 full-time guidance counselors and one college counselor.

Palisades offers over 40 AP, Advanced Placements and Honors classes, teams in 14 different men’s and women’s sports, over 100 student clubs, a comprehensive Community Service program, and a dedicated College Advising Center. Their Academic Decathlon team consistently ranks among the top ten in the State. And the athletic teams have won numerous Western Division and CIF City Section Championships in a variety of sports, including three Championships in tennis and swimming in 2005-06.

Many Palisades Charter’s alumni have gone on to professional careers in sports, including NBA, National Basketball Association stars Kiki Vandeweghe and Steve Kerr, NFL, National Football League Quarterback Jay Schroeder, professional golfer Amy Alcott, and Sports Announcer and Beach Volleyball Hall of Famer, Chris Marlowe.

Palisades Charter High School’s mission is to provide an academic environment, which fosters curiosity, creativity, responsibility, honesty, logical thinking and an appreciation for self and others, in order  to help each individual succeed in today’s changing world.
