High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
 
Deerfield Beach High School, DBHS is a public high school in Deerfield Beach, Florida. It is part of Broward School District and has an enrollment of approximately 2950. Academically the school has fared comparatively poor to state averages in both its SAT, scholastic aptitude test and scholastic assessment test average and graduation rate. The graduation rate for the 2002 to 2003 academic years stood at 58.3 percent compared to the 69 percent state average, and in the 2003 to 2004 academic years, the school earned a SAT average of 938 versus the state mean of 991. However, Deerfield has several strong programs. Most notably, the school features an International Baccalaureate, IB program that offers college-level academics to many of Broward County's most talented students. In a typical year, Deerfield's International Baccalaureate graduates matriculate at some of the nation's top universities.
 
All Deerfield Beach High School graduates are eligible to receive a college scholarship sponsored by the estate of Deerfield Beach pioneers J.D. and Alice Butler. Deerfield Beach High offers numerous after school extracurricular activities, including several successful sports programs, arts organizations, and high school mainstays such as Key Club and the National Honor Society. Club includes Key Club, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Spanish and Multicultural Club, Japan Club, French Clubetc. This school is ranked number 381 on Newsweek's 2005 list of the Best High Schools in America. Currently, DBHS has a FCAT, Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test school grade of a C for the 2005 school year. Deerfield has had teams competing in the national Japan Bowl from 2002 to 2006.
 
Their sport department won many awards. In 1997, the Boys' Basketball team won the Class 5A State Championship. In 2005, the Boys' Waterpolo team won the district 5 Championship, defeating North Broward Preparatory School 17-10. In 2004, the Girls' Basketball team won the Class 6A State Championship. In 2005, the Girls' Waterpolo team won the district 5 championship.
