Los Alamos
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
LAHS, Los Alamos High School is the public high school of Los Alamos, New Mexico. The school mascot is the Hilltopper and school colors are Green and Gold. The Principle of the school is Lynne Saccaro. LAHS has several clubs and organizations including Academic Award Letter, Anime Club, Art Club, Astronomy Club, Band, Business Professionals of America, Chess Club, and Choir.
Since its classification as a school in 2000, the students of LAHS have won over 40 state titles in competitive high school sports. LAHS was honored with the girl’s all-sports trophy in 2000-01, 2001-02, and 2003-04. In 2002, the LAHS Girls Cross Country team led by coaches Rob and Kathy Hipwood won the State Championship with a perfect score of 15. That season the Girls Cross Country Team was ranked second nationally among high school teams.
In 2005, LAHS was named one of the 1,000 Best High Schools in America by Newsweek Magazine. LAHS graduating classes of 2004 and 2005 had 12 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists each. An LAHS student is one of six New Mexico semifinalists in the 2005 Presidential Scholars competition.
At LAHS, their mission is to promote educational growth through a rigorous curriculum along with the acquisition of technical skills and knowledge that will provide a basis for lifelong learning and will create a bridge between education and career.
