High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
 
Menlo-Atherton High School is a four-year comprehensive secondary school located in Atherton, California which was established in 1951. Menlo-Atherton is part of the Sequoia Union High School District. The school first opened in 1951, it had an initial enrollment of 1015 students. As of 2005, the school has 2090 students enrolled. The school mascot is the bear and the school colors are maroon and gold. The Principal of the school is Denise Plante.
 
Menlo-Atherton has been named one of the top secondary schools in the nation by the United States Department of Education as part of its National School Recognition Program. In 2005, Newsweek ranked the school as the 259th best school in the United States. Menlo-Atherton also offers the most AP, Advanced Placement courses in the district with fourteen, ranging from Studio Art to US History.
 
Menlo-Atherton offer the advanced placement courses Biology, Calculus, English Composition or Language, English Literature, European History, French, Latin, Spanish, Statistics, Studio Art and U.S. History. Art, business, child development, gender studies, industrial arts, computers, instrumental and vocal music, living skills, psychology, and work experience are offered as electives. In the Technology Wing, they offer classes in computer science, networking and integrated science.

The mission of Menlo-Atherton is to challenge students to maximize their potential as learners, achievers, and productive world citizens. School will offer for all Students rigorous standards based curricula in preparation for advanced educational opportunities, career paths to provide a school to career with employment and higher education, the knowledge and skill necessary to attain optimal health and physical fitness and to maintain both throughout their lives.
