Maritime & Science Tech
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Maritime & Science Tech is a top high school located in the United States. Maritime & Science Technology Academy commonly referred to as MAST Academy is a public high school in Miami, Florida. MAST Academy is a magnet school under the governance of Miami-Dade County Public Schools with an enrollment of about 550 students as of September 2006. Its principal is Thomas C. Fisher II.
The academic focus of MAST Academy is mainly driven toward maritime studies. Students choose one of three major areas of study in which a traditional U.S. high school curriculum is infused with marine-themed subjects. These major areas of study are Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, Maritime Studies and Culture, and Marine Related Industries. The school's mascot is the mako shark and the main sports are water-related, such as water polo, swimming, sailing, and crew. MAST Academy was also known for its powerhouse water polo team, winning the Boys State Championship in 1996 and placing second in 1999.
In October 2006, MAST was named a Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education for the second time; the school's first Blue Ribbon Award came in 1994. The school has been ranked one of Florida's strongest high schools, among both public and private institutions and it has often received top marks on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test in the county and among the top in the state, as well.
