Lafayette
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Lafayette High School is a high school in St. Joseph, Missouri. It was established in 1917, and at the time was the third high school in the city. As of 2006 it has an enrolment of some 855. Dr. Tryan Sumy is the Principal of the Lafayette High School.
Lafayette High School has served the St. Joseph community for over 89 years. Over the years, the school has adjusted to changes in population and culture of the community. Lafayette has provided an increasing variety of academic and extra-curricular opportunities for the students.
In 1917, North High School was built on a block of property surrounded by Highland, Dolman, Washington and Fourth Streets. The third St. Joseph high school was built to meet the needs of the northside students. The board soon changed the school's name to Lafayette High School, honoring Marquis de Lafayette. Seventeen teachers, under the direction of Principal Vincent A. Davis, served students in grades 1 through 10. Extra-curricular activities included basketball and football. The students chose green and gray for their colors.
The mission of Lafayette High School is to enhance the students' academic, artistic, social, and technological skills to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing and increasingly diverse society.
