High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11 and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
 
Ithaca High School, IHS, is a public high school in Ithaca, New York. It is part of the Ithaca City school district and has an enrollment of approximately 1,675. Since 1960, Ithaca High School has been located at 1401 north Cayuga street in the north end of Ithaca, near Stewart park and Cayuga Lake. It is a California style campus, with 11 mostly interconnected buildings spread across a fairly wide area. Typically, about 70 percent  of students matriculate at four year colleges and 20 percent at two year colleges following graduation.
 
The current principal is Joseph M. Wilson. The school was established in the year 1875. The mascot of the school is Little red bear. The school had a reputation for strong academics. The students still score well above state and national averages. The mean Scholastic aptitude test score in 2003 was 1169, compared to 1026 nationally. The school traditionally had sent a very large number of graduates to nearby Cornell University; from 2000 to 2004.
 
There are 140 professional staff members, including about 120 classroom teachers and over 85 percent  of the faculty has a Master's degree or higher. The school has done well in many extra curricular activities as well. From 1955 until 1967, the school band under the direction of Frank Battisti received national recognition for its musicianship and innovation. It has won four New York state class A Boys’ Ice Hockey championships as well as three upstate New York Girls' Hockey League championships.
 
The mission of Ithaca High School is to provide their students equal opportunities to grow along with all round development. The schools offers various placement courses. It helps the students to understand their true potential. It also helps them to acquire knowledge in a unique way resulting in the development of values which are essential for future success.
