High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district. CVHS, Capistrano Valley High School is situated on a hilltop in Mission Viejo with a panoramic view of nearby Saddleback Mountain. Capistrano Valley serves a geographic area which includes portions of Mission Viejo and San Juan Capistrano. Their enrollment totals more than 2800 in grades 9 to 12. CVHS is an International Baccalaureate World school which has been recognized as a California Distinguished School and National Blue Ribbon School Finalist for overall excellence in academics, student achievement and athletics. Their school was also recognized by Redbook magazine for excellence.

Capistrano Valley High school complex includes a new 2 storey building with 8 classrooms and 6 new science rooms, added to their existing 10 fully-equipped science labs, a career and college planning center as well as four computer labs. The media center houses an extensive collection of books, periodicals, reference materials and audio equipment, in addition to a large bank of computers and printers for student use. CVHS boasts one of the County’s finest personal education and athletics complexes featuring an all-weather track, a 50 meter pool, 2 gymnasiums and a state-of-the-art field turf stadium.
Academically, over 90 percent of their students continue to postsecondary education. Recent Capistrano Valley High graduates are attending Yale, Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, University of California, Los Angeles, UC, University of California Berkeley, the U.S. Naval Academy and other highly competitive institutions of higher education.

Capistrano Valley competes in the South Coast League, which is a member of the CIF, California Interscholastic Federation. Their curriculum is structured to meet the needs and interests of all students. While emphasis is placed on a strong college preparatory curriculum, they provide opportunities for students to pursue vocational and technical paths through the ROP, Regional Occupational Program. Course offerings give practical hands-on work experience and opportunities for their students to participate in internship programs within the community.
