High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.

La Jolla country school known informally as Country Day, LJCDS or LJCD is a selective private school in La Jolla, a suburb of San Diego, California. It was founded as the Balmer School by Louise C. Balmer in 1926. The school contains a lower school consisting of nursery through fourth grade, a middle school consisting of fifth grade through eighth grade and an upper school consisting of the rest of the grades, ninth through twelfth. The school dress colors are Blue, White and Black. Richard C. Atkinson serves on the school's Board of Trustees.

In discovered history La Jolla Country Day School traces its beginnings to The Balmer School, founded in 1926 by Louise C. Balmer. A small cottage on Coast Boulevard served as the schoolhouse for the four children who attended the primary school that first year. They learned about reading, writing and arithmetic in an atmosphere where individualized attention was valued.

La Jolla Country Day School recognizes and values the unique differences that they all bring to the community. The school also realizes that a variety of environments is essential to strong moral growth. As the students develop their decision-making and communication skills in Nursery through Grade 12, they are afforded a band of acceptable behavior that balances the policies of the school and their individuality.

The Vision Statement La Jolla Country Day School is the school of choice for families who value an education that develops people of good character and enables children to achieve their potential as scholars, artists and athletes of character. The mission of La Jolla Country Day School is to challenge students to maximize their potential as learners, achievers and productive world citizens.
