High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.

John Muir School is a top high school situated in the United States. John Muir School is a magnet option of San Diego City Schools. San Diego, Muir's K-12 grade span and smaller class sizes promote a family atmosphere in which students are both teachers and learners in multi-grade groupings. Their graduates are college ready, technologically savvy and world wise. They will also be able to easily understand the messages of others, an involved citizen who contributes time, energy and talent to the community.

John Muir School enrollment never exceeds 440 students. The class sizes are limited, so that each child receives individual attention.  The education is family-style, allowing students to learn from passionate and involved teachers and to teach each other through cross-age tutoring and buddy classes. Muir is a magnet school, focusing on helping students become global citizens by involving them with other schools, teachers, students and projects around the world. Their students learn to appreciate the many cultures of the world and to respect the environment around them.

At the high school level, both French and Spanish are offered.  A four by four schedule allows students to focus on fewer classes at a time, but accumulate additional credits.  Students have access to college level courses at Mesa College, Advanced Placement courses, and University of California College Prep online courses.

The mission of the John Muir School is to provide each student with an equal opportunity to succeed by promoting intellectual growth, creativity, self-discipline, cultural and linguistic sensitivity, democratic responsibility, economic competence and physical and mental health so that each student can achieve his or her maximum potential.
