California Academy of Math & Science
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
CAMS, California Academy of Mathematics and Science is a public magnet high school in Carson, California focusing on science and mathematics. Located on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills, CAMS shares many facilities with the university, including the gymnasium and library. Unlike similar schools such as the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, CAMS is non-residential, drawing its students only from Long Beach and the cities of the South Bay region. The students are admitted only as freshmen, after an application and interview process.
CAMS develop the talents of motivated students to become thoughtful and productive members of an increasingly global and technological society. The school offers a precise and innovative college-preparatory prospectus which is available to school districts throughout the region and nation. CAMS feature a strong college preparation curriculum, with much of its administration, counseling and culture focused on helping students into four-year universities.
The California Academy of Mathematics and Science is a complete public, four-year high school which seeks to raise the nation's pool of graduates in mathematics and science. The various departments include English, foreign language, general studies, social science, math, physical education or sports, science or engineering, student clubs, visual or performing arts departments.
California Academy of Mathematics and Science is highly educational and provide not only several Advanced Placement courses, but a broad range of athletic and extra curricular opportunities for all students.
