High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
 
Arcata High School established in the 1920's, is located at 1720 Main Street in downtown Arcata, California. It is the primary public high school in Arcata and includes students in grades 9 through 12. The current population of the school is around 1,000. It is 76 percent Caucasian, 7 percent Latino, 7 percent Native American, 2 percent African-American, and 2 percent Asian American. Principle of the school is Kirschner, Jay.
 
Arcata High School has a number of special programs, including the Arcata Arts Institute, which helps students with a particular interest in the arts to pursue their interests. Arcata High also hosts CEDAR, Center of Excellence for Document Analysis and Recognition academy, a program which allows students to initiate projects that will promote growth in the high school or Arcata community. The school has many departments like English, Fine Art, Math, Physical Education, Science, Social science.
 
The AHS science department is working with local schools and the California state parks department on the redwood ecology for ports program. Ports stand for Parks Online Resource for Teachers and Students. Ports are a website with opportunities to explore several of their State Parks.
 
Arcata High School offers many courses with an exceptionally high pass rate. The Arcata Arts Institute will offer a unique balance of tradition and innovation, liberal arts and visual arts, technology and touch, fine art and design. The institute community is committed to expanding boundaries and vision through rigorous study. Last spring AHS was awarded 250,000 dollars grant, to be dispersed over the next 4 years through the California Department of Education, for the implementation of a SSP, Specialized Secondary Program at this high school. The SSP grant will create a school within Arcata High School for advanced arts study. The mission of Arcata High School is to provide educational opportunities that enable all students and staff to reach their potential in a safe, supportive environment.
