It is one of three high schools in the Pleasanton Unified School District. Amador has experienced an increase in diversity over the years. It is located forty miles southeast of San Francisco, the city of Pleasanton has a population of approximately 67,000 and has experienced considerable growth over the last decade in its residential and business base.
 
It has achieved national recognition in academics, athletics, and extra or co-curricular programs. Amador has been selected as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2002, California Distinguished High School, and a California Digital High School. It also has published several award-winning yearbooks.
