Mitchell is a city in Lawrence County, Indiana, United States. The population was 4,567 at the 2000 census. Lawrence County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. Born in Mitchell, Indiana, he graduated from Mitchell High School, and then earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 1950. A Persimmon Festival is held each September in Mitchell.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.8 square kilometers. 8.8 square kilometers of it is land and 0.29 percent is water. In the city the population was spread out with 26.0 percent under the age of 18, 7.9 percent from 18 to 24, 27.1 percent from 25 to 44, 22.9 percent from 45 to 64, and 16.2 percent who were 65 years of age or older.
