The population was 12,451 at the 2000 census. It is the smaller of two principal cities of the Panama City, Florida-Lynn Haven, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 14,663. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.7 square kilometers . 21.1 square kilometers of it is land and 3.6 square kilometers of it is water. In the city the population was spread out with 26.1 percent under the age of 18, 7.2 percent from 18 to 24, 30.4 percent from 25 to 44, 24.3 percent from 45 to 64, and 12.0 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 males.
