Pottsville is the largest city and county seat of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, USA. The population was 15,549 inhabitants at the 2000 census. Pottsville is named for its founder, John Pott, who settled the town in 1806 and formally laid it out in 1816. The site of Pottsville was originally part of Chester County. Subsequently Pottsville became part of Lancaster County, then Berks County, and finally in 1811, Schuylkill County. The borough of Pottsville became the county seat in 1851. Pottsville became a third class city in 1911.
Pottsville is located at the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.9 square kilometers. In the city the population was spread out with 22.6 percent under the age of 18, 7.2 percent from 18 to 24, 27.2 percent from 25 to 44, 22.1 percent from 45 to 64, and 20.9 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.5 males.
