Port St. Lucie is a city in St. Lucie County, Florida, United States. The population of Port St. Lucie was 88,769 inhabitants at the United States 2000 Census. According to the 2005 Census estimates, the city proper had an estimated population of 131,692. The Census Bureau announced in June 2005 that Port St. Lucie was the fastest growing large city in the U.S. The Palm Beach Post reported that the city had passed a population of 150,000 inhabitants in early 2006.
Port Saint Lucie started as a development of the General Development Corporation and became a city on April 27, 1961. The very rapid population growth started after 1980, with a population around 15,000 in 1980, and around 55,000 in 1990. There were only about 300 inhabitants in 1970. Port St. Lucie is located at the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 198.6 square kilometers.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.3 percent under the age of 18, 5.9 percent from 18 to 24, 28.1 percent from 25 to 44, 22.8 percent from 45 to 64, and 18.8 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 males.
