In 2000, the population of the city was 15,333 and an area of 30.3 square kilometers. The city is the county seat of Ware County. Waycross is located at is the closest city to the Okefenokee Swamp. In the city the population was spread out with 26.3 percent under the age of 18, 8.5 percent from 18 to 24, 25.2 percent from 25 to 44, 20.5 percent from 45 to 64, and 19.5 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 83.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.9 males.
