Pittsfield is the largest city in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. It is the principal city of the Pittsfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of Berkshire County.  The population was 45,793 inhabitants at the 2000 census and remains relatively stable.
 
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 109.6 square kilometers. In the city the population was spread out with 23.2 percent under the age of 18, 6.9 percent from 18 to 24, 28.3 percent from 25 to 44, 23.0 percent from 45 to 64, and 18.6 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
 
Pittsfield is centrally located in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts, and borders Lenox, Massachusetts, home of Tanglewood summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra as well as the Tanglewood Jazz Festival. The points of interest are Berkshire Athenaeum, Berkshire Museum, Hancock Shaker Village and Hebert Arboretum.
