Picayune

Picayune is a city in Pearl River County in Mississippi, a state of the United States of America. The population was 10,535 inhabitants at the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 30.6 square kilometers. The population density was 345.9 per square kilometers. There were 4,568 housing units at an average density of 150.0 per square kilometers.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.0 percent under the age of 18, 9.4 percent from 18 to 24, 25.5 percent from 25 to 44, 23.0 percent from 45 to 64, and 15.1 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 82.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.2 males.
Picayune was founded in 1904, named by Eliza Jane Poitevent Nicholson, the owner and the publisher of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. The points of interest are Crosby Arboretum. The Arboretum is home to the Pinecote Pavilion designed by the late E. Fay Jones. Jones was an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright and followed many of Wright's design principles.
Picayune experiences a boom with day tourists, owing to the clear air, town character with rich culture, high quality of life and conspicuously original history. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of nature, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people also combine to make this region one of the most important tourist attractions in United States.
