Pensacola has been under the possession of the Spanish, French, British, United States, Confederate States, and has remained a part of the United States since the end of the American Civil War.
 
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 102.7 square kilometers. The population density was 956.8 per square kilometers. There were 26,995 housing units at an average density of 459.2 per square kilometers.
