Stamford is a city in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 126,745 inhabitants. Its population is rapidly growing due to influx of jobs and its commuting distance to New York City. Stamford is one of the top 4 largest cites in the state of Connecticut. Stamford is part of the New York metropolitan area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 134.9 square kilometers. The 97.8 square kilometers of it is land and 37.1 square kilometers of it 27.52 percent is water. Stamford has a cluster of corporate headquarters many of which moved from New York in the 1980s this includes four Fortune 500 Companies, nine Fortune 1000 Companies, thirteen Courant 100 Companies, numerous divisions of large corporations, as well as a large number of secretive hedge funds. This gives Stamford one of the largest concentrations of corporations in the nation.
Stamford experiences a boom with day tourists, owing to the clear air, town character with rich culture, high quality of life and conspicuously original history. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of nature, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people also combine to make this region one of the most important tourist attractions in United States.
