Spearfish

Spearfish is a city in Lawrence County, South Dakota, USA. The population was 8,606 inhabitants at the 2000 census. The city was founded during the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1876 at the mouth of Spearfish Canyon. One way or another, the history of the city of Spearfish begins with the search for gold in the Black Hills.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.8 square kilometers. Since it is located at the base the Black Hills and only a few miles from the geographical center of the United States, the climate is highly variable. Spearfish holds the world record for the fastest temperature change. In the city the population was spread out with 20.3 percent under the age of 18, 21.5 percent from 18 to 24, 23.3 percent from 25 to 44, 17.9 percent from 45 to 64, and 17.1 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 87.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.3 males.
Spearfish experiences a boom with day tourists, owing to the clear air, town character with rich culture, high quality of life and conspicuously original history. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of nature, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people also combine to make this region one of the most important tourist attractions in United States.
