Greeneville is a town in Greene County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 15,198 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Greene CountyGR6. The town was named in honor of Nathanael Greene. Incidentally, it is one of only a very few towns with this spelling in the United States although there are numerous U.S. towns named Greenville. The Los Angeles-class submarine Greeneville was named in honor of this city. The town hosts the Greeneville Astros baseball club of the Appalachian League. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.4 square kilometers, all land.

In the town the population was spread out with 21.3 percent under the age of 18, 7.7 percent from 18 to 24, 26.3 percent from 25 to 44, 24.3 percent from 45 to 64, and 20.4 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 84.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.5 males. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and gain enthusiasm in its natural beauty and populace. It enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers.
