Opelousas

Opelousas is one the top cities in the United States. Opelousas was incorporated in 1821. The city of Opelousas is the parish seat of St. Landry Parish, in the US state of Louisiana. The population was 22,860 at the 2000 census. The name of the city comes from the Opelousas tribe of Native Americans. There was a community of French traders conducting commerce with the Opelousas in this area as early as 1690. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.3 square kilometers. The population density was 1,250.2 per square kilometers.
In the city the population was spread out with 30.3 percent under the age of 18, 9.4 percent from 18 to 24, 24.9 percent from 25 to 44, 19.6 percent from 45 to 64, and 15.8 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 84.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.4 males.
Opelousas is a center of Zydeco music. The Yambilee Festival is held each year in Opelousas. Opelousas is the native town of 1972 Olympic champion Rodney Milburn. For visitors to Opelousas, culture abounds in the sites and sounds of a community rich in history. Opelousas is the home of the late great Zydeco king, Clifton Chenier, and a host of other musicians that carry on the spirited tradition of Creole-African-Caribbean rhythms that began here in this area of Southwest Louisiana.
Opelousas is also known as the city of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
