Oneonta

Oneonta is one of the top city destinations. The city of Oneonta is located within Otsego County, New York and is surrounded by the town of Oneonta, a separate political unit. The city was established in 1908. In 2000, the population of the city was 13,292 and an area of 11.3 square kilometers. Oneonta is home to the National Soccer Hall of Fame, State University of New York at Oneonta, Hartwick College and the Oneonta Tigers baseball club of the New York-Penn League.
In the city the population was spread out with 13.6 percent under the age of 18, 43.1 percent from 18 to 24, 17.6 percent from 25 to 44, 13.8 percent from 45 to 64, and 11.8 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 23 years. For every 100 females there were 82.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.7 males.
Oneonta was once home to the largest locomotive roundhouse in the world. Otsego County's tourist offerings are as rich and diverse as the texture of its wooded hillsides and Rolling Meadows. The city of Oneonta is a much different place than in its not so distant past. The city has grown from an Indian council site to trading post, to city, to the educational, cultural, business, retail and professional center for the tri-county area.
