Schenectady is a municipality in Schenectady County, New York, United States. In 2000, the population of the city was 61,821 and an area of 28.5 square kilometers. Schenectady is the 9th largest city in New York State. The name Schenectady is derived from a Mohawk word for on that side of the pinery, or near the pines or place beyond the pine plains.
 
The city of Schenectady is in eastern New York State, near the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. It is in the same metropolitan area as the state capital, Albany, New York. The area that is now Schenectady was originally the land of the Mohawk tribe of the Iroquois Nation. Schenectady was first settled in 1661 when the area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland.
 
In the city the population was spread out with 24.3 percent under the age of 18, 11.6 percent from 18 to 24, 29.7 percent from 25 to 44, 19.1 percent from 45 to 64, and 15.2 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.4 males.
