It is located at the eastern edge of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, on the Canadian border, separated from its twin city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. In 2000, the population of the city was 16,542 and an area of 52.3 square kilometers. It is the county seat of Chippewa County. In the city the population was spread out with 19.4 percent under the age of 18, 18.1 percent from 18 to 24, 31.9 percent from 25 to 44, 18.2 percent from 45 to 64, and 12.5 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 122.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 128.3 males. Sault Ste. Marie is the kind of town you daydream about.
