Saginaw
The United States of America is a country in North America that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and shares land borders with Canada and Mexico. The United States is a federal constitutional republic, with its capital in Washington, D.C., District of Columbia.
Saginaw is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 61,799. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 47.1 square kilometers. 45.2 square kilometers of it is land and 1.9 square kilometers of it is water.
In the city the population was spread out with 31.6 percent under the age of 18, 9.9 percent from 18 to 24, 28.3 percent from 25 to 44, 18.7 percent from 45 to 64, and 11.4 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.0 males.
The area of the present city of Saginaw was inhabited by woodland Native American Indians prior to settlement by those of European ancestry. The Saginaw region includes an extensive network of many rivers and streams which converge into the Saginaw River and provided a means for easy travel for the Native American population among numerous settlements and hunting areas, as well as access to Lake Huron. Saginaw was also a frequent meeting location for councils of the Ojibwe, Pottawatomi, and Ottawa.
The Saginaw Public Schools District is the school district that controls twenty six public elementary, middle and high schools in Saginaw and 1 elementary school in the nearby city of Zilwaukee. The service area comprising the district includes the city of Saginaw, city of Zilwaukee and Kochville Township, all within Saginaw County. The district is governed by a seven member elected board of education.
