New Orleans
The United States of America is a country in North America that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and shares land borders with Canada and Mexico. The United States is a federal constitutional republic, with its capital in Washington, D.C., District of Columbia.
New Orleans is a port city and historically the largest city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. New Orleans is in southeastern Louisiana along the Mississippi River, just south of Lake Pontchartrain, and is coextensive with Orleans Parish. New Orleans is known for its multicultural heritage as well as its music and cuisine. Its status as a world-famous tourist destination is due in part to its architecture and its annual Mardi Gras and other celebrations. It has been called the most unique city in America. In 2000, the population of the city was 484,674 and an area of 907 square kilometers.
New Orleans was founded in 1718 by the French Mississippi Company. New Orleans also was once part of the Florida territory in what was once known as West Florida. The climate of New Orleans is humid subtropical, with short, generally mild winters and hot, humid summers.
