New Orleans is a port city and historically the largest city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. Its status as a world-famous tourist destination is due in part to its architecture and its annual Mardi Gras and other celebrations. It has been called the most unique city in America. In 2000, the population of the city was 484,674 and an area of 907 square kilometers.    
 
New Orleans was founded in 1718 by the French Mississippi Company. New Orleans also was once part of the Florida territory in what was once known as West Florida. The climate of New Orleans is humid subtropical, with short, generally mild winters and hot, humid summers.
