Muscatine is a municipality in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. In 2000, the population of the city was 22,697 and an area of 46.3 square kilometers. It is the county seat of Muscatine County. Muscatine began as a frontier trading post, founded by Colonel George Davenport. Muscatine was initially called Bloomington when incorporated in 1839.
 
In the city the population was spread out with 26.4 percent under the age of 18, 9.2 percent from 18 to 24, 28.6 percent from 25 to 44, 21.9 percent from 45 to 64, and 14.0 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there
were 90.2 males.
