Mount Sterling is a municipality in Van Buren County, Iowa, United States. The population was 40 at the 2000 census and an area of 1.0 square kilometers. It earned the nickname Gateway to the West because it served as a departure point for settlers heading to the west. It was the starting point and the return destination of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In the city the population was spread out with 20.0 percent under the age of 18, 32.5 percent from 25 to 44, 35.0 percent from 45 to 64, and 12.5 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 128.6 males.
