Mount Airy is a municipality in Surry County, North Carolina, United States. In 2000, the population of the city was 8,484 and an area of 21.7 square kilometers. Mount Airy's most well-known feature is its granite quarry, the largest open-faced quarry in the United States. In the city the population was spread out with 21.6 percent under the age of 18, 6.5 percent from 18 to 24, 25.1 percent from 25 to 44, 21.3 percent from 45 to 64, and 25.6 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 84.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.4 males.
