Morgantown is a city in Monongalia County, West Virginia, on the banks of the Monongahela River. Morgantown is the largest city in North-Central West Virginia and is the principal city of and is included in the Morgantown, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county seat, it is best known as the home both of West Virginia University and of a one of a kind, experimental personal rapid transit system.
 
The city was founded by Zackquill Morgan in 1772. Morgantown is closely tied to the Anglo-French struggle for this territory. Until the Treaty of Paris in 1763, is known as Morgantown was greatly contested among settlers and Native Americans, as well as the English and the French. The treaty decided the issue in favor of the English, but Indian fighting continued almost to the beginning of the American Revolution.
 
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 26.2 square kilometers. Morgantown's age distribution, which is heavily influenced by the presence of West Virginia University, is  11.1 percent under the age of 18, 44.7 percent from 18 to 24, 20.4 percent from 25 to 44, 13.5 percent from 45 to 64, and 10.4 percent who were 65 years of age or older.
