Edison is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the township had a total population of 97,687 inhabitants, making it at the time the fifth largest municipality in New Jersey. As of the U.S. Census 2004 estimate, the population of Edison is 100,142 inhabitants, moving down a notch behind Woodbridge Township into sixth place.
 
Edison was ranked the 28th most livable small city in America by Money Magazine and the 2nd in New Jersey in 2006 in Money Magazine's Best Places to Live. In the 2006 survey of America's Safest Cities, the township was ranked 23rd out of 371 cities included nationwide in the 13th annual Morgan Quitno survey.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 79.5 square kilometers. In the township the population was spread out with 22.9 percent under the age of 18, 7.8 percent from 18 to 24, 34.0 percent from 25 to 44, 23.4 percent from 45 to 64, and 11.9 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.0 males.
