Elizabeth City is a city in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, in the United States. The population was 17,188 inhabitants at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Pasquotank County. Elizabeth City was founded as the town of Redding in 1793 on land acquired from Adam and Elizabeth Tooley. In 1794 the town was renamed Elizabeth, and in 1801 Elizabeth City.
 
According to the United States census bureau, the city has a total area of 24.8 square kilometers. The city is located alongside the Pasquotank River, which connects to the Albemarle Sound and is part of the Intracoastal Waterway. In the city the population was spread out with 25.7 percent under the age of 18, 15.1 percent from 18 to 24, 25.4 percent from 25 to 44, 18.1 percent from 45 to 64, and 15.7 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.4 males.
