Charleston County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of 2005, the population is 330,368 inhabitants. Its county seat is Charleston. It is the 3rd most populated county in the state. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,517 square kilometers. As of the census of 2000, there were 309,969 people, 143,326 households, and 97,448 families residing in the county.
The population density was 130 per square kilometers. There were 141,031 housing units at an average density of 59 per square kilometers. The racial makeup of the county was 61.92 percent White, 34.49 percent Black or African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 1.12 percent Asian, 0.06 percent Pacific Islander, 0.99 percent from other races, and 1.16 percent from two or more races. 2.40 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.70 percent under the age of 18, 12.00 percent from 18 to 24, 30.30 percent from 25 to 44, 22.00 percent from 45 to 64, and 11.90 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 93.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.50 males.
