Beckley
The United States of America is a country in North America that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and shares land borders with Canada and Mexico. The United States is a federal constitutional republic, with its capital in Washington, D.C., District of Columbia.
Beckley is a city in Raleigh County, West Virginia, USA and founded on April 4, 1838. The population was estimated to be 17,254 by the US Census Bureau in 2005 according to the censtats.census.gov website. Beckley has also been referred to as Beckleyville and its nickname was the Smokeless Coal Capital. It is also called the gateway to Southern West Virginia. The population of the Beckley area is roughly 77,000 including Raleigh County and parts of Fayette County. Beckley was named in honor of John James Beckley, who was the first Clerk of the House of Representatives and the first Librarian of Congress.
Beckley is home to one of the busiest Wal-Mart locations in the United States as has been brought to the attention of the associates of the original Supercenter in the area. Wal-Mart has recently opened a new superstore roughly 4 miles from their existing location. Additionally, in 2004, Wal-Mart Stores opened a Sams Club. Beckley is home to two universities, Mountain State University and a branch campus of Concord University
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.8 square kilometers, all land. In the city the population was spread out with 21.8 percent under the age of 18, 8.3 percent from 18 to 24, 25.3 percent from 25 to 44, 24.4 percent from 45 to 64, and 20.2 percent who were 65 years of age or older.
A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages, Beckley is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
