Council Bluffs

Council Bluffs is a city in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, United States on the east bank of the Missouri River. In 2000, the population of the city was 58,268 and an area of 102.7 square kilometers. Sometimes considered a suburb of Omaha, Nebraska, on the opposite bank of the Missouri River, Council Bluffs is numerous decades older than the much larger Nebraska city which was founded by Iowa businessmen and real estate speculators in 1854. Council Bluffs is also home to the Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail, in use from 1885 until 1969, which is one of three remaining examples of a lazy Susan or rotary jail.
